505 Digital Control for Steam Turbines

The Woodward 505 is a dedicated digital control for industrial steam turbines of all sizes and applications. It provides integrated speed, load, and pressure control with built-in turbine protection, an 8.4-inch color graphical display serving as both operator panel and programming station, and Ethernet/serial communications for plant DCS integration. The 505 is the predecessor to the 505XT and remains widely installed across power generation and petrochemical facilities.

505 Digital Control for Steam Turbines

Key Features

Control

  • Purpose-built algorithms to start, stop, control, and protect steam turbines and turbo-expanders
  • PID-to-PID logic for stable bumpless mode transfers during plant upsets
  • Controls speed, load, inlet header pressure, exhaust header pressure, or tie-line power
  • Passive or active speed probe inputs
  • One or two split-range actuator outputs
  • Field programmable via front panel or PC

Protection

  • 3 critical speed avoidance bands
  • Overspeed anticipation and shutdown protection
  • Configurable under- or over-pressure shutdown logic
  • Minimum and maximum speed and load settings

Communications

  • Ethernet: Modbus TCP and OPC
  • Serial: Modbus RS-232/RS-485
  • SNTP clock sync to plant DCS
  • 8.4-inch (21 cm) graphical display with password security
  • Unpluggable terminal blocks for easy installation

Applications

  • Industrial steam turbines of all sizes (single-valve)
  • Turbo-expanders driving generators, compressors, pumps, or industrial fans
  • Power generation and mechanical drive applications
  • Steam plant parameter control: speed, load, header pressure, tie-line power
  • Predecessor to the 505XT — existing 505 installations are candidates for upgrade

Drake Controls Services

Drake Controls is a Woodward Authorized Distributor and stocks 505 units and parts. Many existing 505 installations are prime candidates for a 505XT upgrade, and Drake’s field service team handles the retrofit engineering, panel design, and commissioning. For units remaining in service, Drake provides repair, overhaul, spare parts, and field support.
